Quilted Postcards
Project by: Darlene Cahill

Fabric postcards are a fun “anytime” project for creative sewers.
These little treasures can be quilted, embellished and mailed with love.

WHAT YOU NEED
ANYTHING LIKE:
  • fabric scraps
  • trims
  • newspaper words
  • stickers
  • flat buttons
  • sequins
  • beads
  • lace
  • appliqués
  • charms
  • feathers
  • netting
FOR WRITING ON FRONT:
  • muslin or
  • plain light cotton
FOR INNER LAYER:
  • Fast2Fuse
  • felt
  • canvas
  • duck cloth
The following are a few pointers and ideas to get you started:
1. Postcards should measure 4 x 6 inch and should not exceed 1/8 inch in thickness.

2. Ask the post office to hand stamp. You may want to glue on the stamp to make sure it stays on the material.

3. Use muslin or plain light cotton on one side to address and write a message.

4. Use ANYTHING (fabric scraps, trims, newspaper words, stickers, flat buttons, sequins, beads, lace, appliqués, charms, feathers, netting, etc.) on the front side.

5. Stabilize the front layers of goodies using your decorative stitches, free motion stippling or simply a grid.

6. Sandwich a stiff inner layer (Use Fast2Fuse, felt, canvas, duck cloth, etc.) between the front and the back and sew all three layers around the outside edge. Use one of your satin stitches or simply a straight stitch and pinking shears. You may even want to bias-bind the edge.
YOU are the artist so there is no right and wrong. Have fun putting some creativity in your correspondence!
