do we collect online? How do we use it? merchandise orders When you first place an order on our site, we ask you to provide personally identifiable information by filling out and submitting an online customer profile form. This information includes your name, mailing address, telephone number, shipping address(es), email address, a password, and your credit card number and expiration date. We use this information to process and fulfill your order and to notify you of your order status by email. When you return to the site and place another order, if you use your password or provide other key, personally identifiable information, we use this information to provide you with access to your customer profile and order information. We save the address(es) you provide for shipment and, when you place future orders, we provide the address(es) to you as a selectable list for your convenience. We also ask you for personally identifiable information about other people you are sending gifts to. We use this information only to ship your gifts and, if you request it, to send each gift recipient an email notification of the gift. This site is not intended for use by children. hsn.com will not knowingly collect any personally identifiable information submitted by visitors to the site who are under the age of 13. sweepstakes and contest When you enter a sweepstakes, contest or other promotional feature, we typically ask you for one or more of your name, address, telephone number, email address and HSN account number, so we can administer the promotion and notify the winners. We notify winners and obtain an affidavit to verify each winner’s eligibility and to obtain consent to post each winner’s name, and state and city of residence. We also send you information by email on upcoming events, new products and services, and special offers we think you’ll be interested in. However, out of respect for the privacy of our visitors we provide the option to not receive these types of communications. (See 4. How can you not receive email?) surveys From time to time we administer surveys on our site. Our surveys are anonymous and do not request personally identifiable information. We collect your ratings and evaluations about products and services we provide, and post aggregate information from these surveys on our site. We also collect information about your characteristics and interests, so that we can tailor our site and our products and services to meet your needs and wishes. If you respond to a survey request for comments, we will collect any personally identifiable information that you choose to provide in the comments section. Any comments you provide can also be viewed by other site visitors. We urge you to exercise caution when providing personally identifiable information in response to survey requests for comments. chatrooms, bulletin boards and product reviews We offer you the opportunity to use a nickname for our chatrooms, bulletin boards and product reviews. If you choose to post messages in our chatrooms, bulletin boards, product reviews, or other message areas, we collect the messages you post and use information you provide to improve our site and our products and services, provide thorough customer service, and follow up on site visitors who may be violating our policies or abusing our system. We also collect any personally identifiable information that you choose to disclose. When you post messages, other site visitors can also view them. We also publish transcripts of archived chats. We urge you to exercise caution when providing personally identifiable financial or other information in the chatrooms, bulletin boards, product reviews or other message areas. Remember that any information you disclose in these areas becomes public information. customer service If you send personal correspondence to our Customer Service department, such as emails or letters, or if others send correspondence to our Customer Service department about your activities or postings on the site, we collect the information so that we can provide thorough customer service and follow up on site visitors who may be violating our policies or abusing our system. job applications When you submit a job application online, we request personally identifying information. We use this information to evaluate and follow up on your application. If you become an employee of HSNi or its affiliates, this information can become part of your employment records. vendor applications When you submit a vendor application online, we request personally identifying information. We use this information to evaluate and follow up on your application. If you become a vendor of HSNi or its affiliates, this information can become part of your account records. cable service request When you submit a request for cable service, we request personally identifying information. We supply your name and contact information to your local cable service provider, so they can contact you to arrange for installation. "cookies" Cookies are small pieces of information that we send to your computer. They are stored by your browser on your computer's hard drive to give you a unique ID. Each time you visit our site using your computer, the cookie allows us to recognize your computer as the one we delivered the cookie to. Our cookies contain only a numeric code, and do not contain any personally identifiable information about you. However, we have the capability to identify you based on the information provided by our cookies, and to correlate that information with your personally identifiable information. Cookies enable us to provide certain features, such as storing items in your Shopping Basket between visits, without losing any of the items in your Shopping Basket. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser to prevent that. Even without a cookie, you can still use most of the features in our site, but it is possible that some features may not work properly. generally The use of tracking tools and cookies are industry standard – you’ll find them at most major web sites. We analyze data gathered by means of tracking tools and cookies only in the aggregate or for segments of our customer base, and not at the individual customer level. | Do we share our
information with others? HSNi and hsn.com perform many of their business operations using the resources of other HSN companies. Consequently, we regularly share your personally identifiable information with these affiliated companies to perform activities necessary to process and fulfill your orders, customer service requests, returns and the like. However, these intermediaries are not authorized to use your information for other purposes. If you are both an hsn.com customer and an HSN television customer, we share your personally identifiable information to avoid sending you duplicate promotional materials. In addition, we share your personally identifiable information with our parent company, InterActiveCorp, and our affiliate that operates HSN television in order to prevent fraud and for corporate record keeping purposes. HSNi and hsn.com also sometimes contract with unaffiliated third parties to provide services, such as software for site features, customer communications, sweepstakes and prize fulfillment, analyzing and evaluating the information we collect, and other services. When we do this, we provide your personally identifiable information to third parties only to provide those services, and they are not authorized to use your personally identifiable information for any other purpose. At your request, we provide your Gift Registry url to people you ask us to send a one-time email to. Items you store in your Gift Registry are visible to those who receive this email. HSNi is a subsidiary of InterActiveCorp (“IAC”), whose other affiliates and businesses include Ticketmaster, CitySearch, Hotel Reservations Network, Match.com, Expedia, Lending Tree and others. HSNi and hsn.com share your personally identifiable information and aggregate statistics about our customers, sales, traffic patterns and other data with other HSN companies, and with other affiliates and businesses of IAC for marketing and promotional purposes. Personally identifiable information you provide to us that becomes part of your HSN employment file (if you become an HSN employee) or vendor file (if you become an HSN vendor) may be shared with others only in accordance with our policies relating to confidentiality of our employment and vendor files generally. Personally identifiable information you provide to us when you submit a request for cable service is shared with your local cable service provider. It is possible that we could decide to sell one or more of the urls or businesses operated at hsn.com. In any transaction of this kind, customer information, including your personally identifiable information, may be among the assets that are transferred. It is also possible that HSNi would sell all or substantially all of its assets and business, either separately or as part of a transaction involving other components of HSN’s business, and in such case customer information would almost certainly be among the assets that are transferred. If we sell our assets in one of these ways, you will be notified by email. We may also disclose your information when we determine it is necessary to comply with applicable laws or to protect the interests or safety of HSN or other visitors to hsn.com. How do we use email? Except as described above under 2. Do we share your information with others?, we do not share your email address with third parties for any purpose. We send one email message to confirm each order you make, and we occasionally send you other email messages containing information specifically relating to your order (such as shipping delays). We also send one email message to each winner of our contests and sweepstakes. On rare occasions we send out strictly service related email announcements. These announcements are not promotional in nature. For instance, we might send you an email message if our service is temporarily suspended for maintenance, or to let you know about a change in our privacy policies. (See 7. When you first place an order and set up your customer profile, we offer a selection of special interest categories for you to indicate your interests and preferences. We will automatically send you information on upcoming events, new products and special offers we think you’ll be interested in based on the interests and preferences you indicate and on your purchase history. You can return to your customer profile at any time to modify your selections at Update Profile. We will also send you promotional emails if you enter a sweepstakes, contest or other promotional feature on our site, or if you provide your email address when you submit an online request for cable service. You can also email HSN’s show hosts. We encourage your communications, since we use your input to improve our site and the products and services we offer. We review every email we receive. not to receive offers and email? If you prefer not to receive promotional emails regarding upcoming events, new products and services, and special offers, you can make the appropriate selections when you set up your customer profile. Also, every one of the promotional emails we send provides you with a way to opt out of receiving further emails. |
How can you verify and correct personal information? You can check your personal information in your customer profile by navigating to Update Profile on our site. If any of this information is incorrect, you can make appropriate changes. However, you cannot delete your customer account information entirely. If you have any question about the accuracy of your personal information, you can contact us online, or by email, telephone or mail. (See 8. How can you contact us with questions or comments, below.) You can access your order by clicking on Order Status or by calling our Customer Service department at 1-800-933-2887. You cannot access other information that we collect, but this is limited to information that you have provided (such as chatroom messages), and information that is not personally identifiable. |
How do we protect our customers' information? hsn.com is committed to online data security. Although total security does not exist on the Internet, we take reasonable steps to work towards assuring the secure transmission and storage of your information. We utilize industry standard efforts, such as firewalls, Secure Socket Layers and encryption software, to protect the transmission of information between your PC and our servers. We store information relating to our customers on servers that are kept in a highly secure environment. While we use Secure Socket Layer encryption to protect sensitive information online, we also seek to protect your information offline by only allowing certain authorized employees to access your information. Our site contains links to other sites. HSNi and hsn.com are not responsible for the privacy practices of these other sites. We encourage you to be aware when you leave our site, and to read the privacy statements of each web site that collects personally identifiable information.
