Seated Liberty dime
  • Struck by the United States Mint between 1837 and 1891 
  • America's Dime for the majority of the 19th century, but it disappeared from circulation more than 100 years ago in the late 19th century and is seldom seen today even in the finest collections 
  • U.S. Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht created the new "Liberty Seated" design as a replacement for the Capped Bust design that had been used on U.S. silver coins since the early part of the 19th century 
  • Longest-running coin design of the 19th century, minted from 1837 to 1891 
  • Most Seated Liberty Dimes were worn out in circulation or melted long ago
  • Replaced by the Barber dime in 1892 
 
Shield nickel
  • America's first nickel 5-cent coin 
  • First minted in 1866, just a year after the end of the Civil War 
  • Last coin made in 1883, when it was replaced with the Liberty Head "V" nickel 
  • Designed by James B. Longacre, who also designed the legendary Indian Head penny 
  • Most Shield nickels were worn out in circulation or melted long ago
