  • Produced by the United States Bureau of the Mint from 1859 to 1909
  • Designed by James Barton Longacre, the Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint
  • The cent's composition was changed from 88% copper to 95% copper due to a shortage of nickel at the United States Mint and public demand for the coin at an all-time high
  • Final decade of releases before the debut of the 1909 Lincoln "Wheat Ears" cent
