Product Description

Giclee Print - The Stages of Life
This gallery-wrapped print on canvas is
a
reproduction of Caspar Friedrich's "The Stages of Life" from 1835. This piece is an example of Friedrich's signature allegorical landscapes, where he depicts four stages of life. In the middle ground he places two young children, symbolizing youth as they play by the shore. Behind them sits a pensive young woman. Turned toward the viewer is a man in a top coat, symbolizing middle age. Finally, looking at the vast landscape is an old man with a cane, symbolizing old age. He places these figures in seascape at dusk, commenting on the idea that there is one constant in all the stages of life: our natural environment. Considered the most important German artist of his time, Friedrich is well known for his allegorical landscapes, depicting figures in mysterious landscapes, such as night skies, morning mists and Gothic ruins. He is primarily concerned with contemplation of nature and the emotional response of the viewer to the natural environment.
