Trends and More

Thanks for all the enthusiastic responses to my 1st blog last month. I have so many ideas to write about I really had to focus to bring this 2nd one into form. First of all, I hope you have been enjoying all the jewels you bought during the Tucson Gem Fair event.

As seen in Tucson, the trend of chocolate colored gems is still going strong. Keep your eyes out for new Smoky Quartz, one of the most affordable ways to have the trend in your wardrobe. Our Gem Buyer, Sandy, is bringing in as many quality chocolate color stones as possible. Fortunately, she knew the trend was coming (saw it in Europe and Tucson last year) so she was on it. It takes a long time to source the stones and have the jewelry created. One of my favorite rings right now is an oval gemstone ring with tigers’ eye on top. It’s luscious, isn’t it? I love how it is so simple, yet sophisticated. It will look like you have owned it for years as a signature collectible the first time you wear it. If you’d like some soft color with your brown, look at this beautiful rainbow colored gemstone necklace (296-823), a perfect year-round choice for mixing and matching. Rainbow Chalcedony is so pretty and easy to wear with all kinds of fashion.

Beads, beads, beads…you can never go wrong with great bead necklace to frame your face. Nomads from centuries ago used to wear their wealth around their necks and wrists. Do you know how? Their currency was beads! We have a rainbow of colors of bead strands to bold necklaces here. If you only wear solitary pendants, you should branch out this year! If you love your pearls, you will love other gems in beads.

This has been on my mind for a long time – the topic is birthstones.

To all my blog readers- what do you think about birthstones? How committed to your stone are you? Do you “substitute” other stones that are the same color like Smoky Quartz for Smoky Topaz if you were born in November? Or are you a die- hard rule follower? Does it even matter to you? If you like that emerald ring, so be it – even if you were born in July (ruby would be your traditional choice). And even though I can’t respond back, I love to see all your comments. It will give me ideas on what to write next time.

Speaking of which, someone asked me what rock I stood next to in the picture from the Tucson fair. That particular green rock is called Dioptase, which is native to Arizona. It was such a pretty green color!

Look for more blog entries from me soon!

Rock on!
Shivan

As a December baby, there are great options for me - however, I am IN LOVE with mandarin garnets. Their high refractivity and that awesome orange color just speaks to me. And if I ever fall into a money pile, I'd go after a Russian demantoid garnet. Good for you for pursuing the GG designation. I understand it is a VERY demanding course. I'd love to learn more about stones, especially things like how to tell if a stone has a window, which stones are mined out, the real story on andesine.

I hope you can supply your audience with as much information as Dan Dennis did. I have learned so much from him and I really miss him. I would like to see more smaller gemstones(under 1 carat) I have small hands and small fingers (5 or 6) and in my sixties, but I love my jewelry and love to show off. My family say I like to sparkle and shine. I have been a member since the nineties and love the shows. I started out in Holiday Florida and now live in Knoxville Tennessee

Hmmm, birthstones. No, I don't wear mine (much)Jan baby, Im not too fond of garnet, athough I do like the rhodolite. I like ALL the pretty colors but I find that I'm drawn to all the blue and purple gems. My birthdate was supposed to be in Feb that's why I wear amethyst. My Dad was born in Dec that's my excuse for wearing all topazs. I like different, unusual, new stones. Larimar is one I love, chrome diopside is another. Wearing more smokey topaz and creating my own pieces. Red Jasper too.

I love all gemstones! Although I am a March baby, I love the good unheated ones with more green in them. I am one of those that buy them to match my clothes color. What I wear depends on what gems I want to wear that day. Everyone knows me for my jewelry. I get compliments all the time. I like the unusual settings. I like having the same gems in silver and gold. Some woman love shoes, I love my gems. I do love all the chocolate gems coming out, plus I love good chocolate! Great blog Shivan!

For more than 40 years I have been searching for my other birthstone, sardonyx. I recently saw a show on cameos, some made with sardonyx. I purchased one. What I would like to know is if there is any way I can purchase a ring with this gemstone, or just a loose stone so I could have it set in a ring possibly with my other gemstone birthstone, peridot. Please let me know if and where I might be able to purchase this. Thanks.

Give me a diamond (or an Absolute) anyday even tho' I am an April baby, after a certain age you don't tell your birthdate. Great blog, you and Colleen are THE BEST!

I could not care less about my birthstone (March), most aquamarines are so washed out, it's the ultimate BORING stone. I buy the stones and designs I fall in love with, lots of Victoria Wiecks. The bead trend is FUN, every time Jay King shows his sweet face, I go big time overboard. Great blog, Shivan. And you are a very classy lady (you and Colleen), I prefer show hosts whose voice doesn't grate on me.

Thanks for the blog Shivan, it's really great. And the video from the gem show was awesome, it looked amazing! (I was wondering what that cool green rock was as well :) I love watching your jewelry shows, I always learn something I didn't know about gems. My birthstone is ruby (july 11 - won't say what year!), but I never really liked it too much. I got the oval gemstone ring, and I LOVE it! Kepp the blogs comin!

I am a peridot for August and besides my class ring I have never bought an item w/that gem in it. If there are any suggestions to a good substitute that I could use let me know. I just find that shade of green to be difficult to match with. Great blog shivan, I always enjoy reading your gem updates!!

Have I missed anything? I've been waiting since last year for March's birth stone. As you can tell I'm a March baby. There was a gentleman on the show last year that had some great rings created. Did I miss him? I remember he showed this beautiful ring he had made for his daughter. Yes, I am a die hard birth stone follower. I don't care when it is mixed with other stones. I think its beauty is enough of an attention graber, unless it is mixed with a diamonds or diamond accents.

My birthday is in june and my birthstone is pearl. I don't really like pearl that much because it reminds me of something my grandmother would wear...lol. I have also heard that my birthstone is also a stone I forget the name of, it's a light lavender purple almost pink, alexandrite maybe. I prefer that to pearl so that's what I wear. My favorite gemstone though is smoky quartz.

Well, to answer your birthstong question. I am March. So I'm Aquamarine. And I LOVE them, but I don't own one because I always thought they were too expensive. So I sort of substitute turquoise (some of which I have gotten from YOU!) So I'll keep watching HSN for more gorgeous turquoise. And THANK YOU for all the great information about jewelry that you bring! Like in olden times people wore their wealth around their neck in the form of beads? Who knew? Thanks!
