Starbright..Diamonds
So, I am back from NYC and the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). I went for the Diamond Grading Lab portion of the Graduate Gemologist Courses. The Diamond Lab was INTENSE. There was so much technical, but great information to know. The instructor was truly fantastic and I am more inspired and curious about gems than ever before. After the training, I escaped to the Berkshire Mountains for a Yoga retreat weekend. It is gorgeous there.
The evening sky looked like it was filled with glittering diamonds. I love nature and the mountains so much. To be outside in the Northeast during spring was a dream come true. The stars have always been a source of hope for me and this made me wonder, do we love Diamonds because they look like the stars or is it the other way around? The moon reminds me of silver, translucent gems and pearls. The sun is gold and the stars are diamonds, of course.
If you are lucky enough to own a diamond, much less a colored one, you know how the comparison can be made.
I’ll never forget the first diamond that I received; it was a tiny cross from my mom for my high school graduation. I know her wedding ring was her first diamond. One of my favorite diamond love stories is about a friend of mine whose husband didn’t eat lunch for 9 months to save up for a diamond ring for his pregnant wife. She delivered a healthy baby boy 2 weeks early so he had to run home with a lame excuse so he could bring her the ring at the hospital. They just had their second boy a few years ago in July. He bought her another diamond and ruby ring this time to go with the first one. She wears them stacked and they look amazing. The story and love behind them as a family are even more amazing.
Diamonds have more lore and history than any other gem. I think that counts in a universal way as well as for us as women personally. They are an intimate statement about who we are when we wear them as they reflect the light within each one of us, as well as their own. Don’t your diamonds have stories to tell? Any reason from “I deserved it” to a graduation or wedding will do.
So many women now buy diamonds for themselves. I love that! You should! I bought myself a replacement diamond cross on a bad Valentine’s Day back in the 90’s. I lost the one my mother bought me and it broke my heart. I then replaced it that infamous February 14th. It felt great, well, better anyway. It was an Independence Day for me. I didn’t think I would ever get married that day and I decided if I wanted a diamond in my life, I was going to have to buy it myself. And that is exactly what I did.
Diamonds are emotional investments as much as, if not more than financial ones. What other item does a person own that they literally keep for a lifetime? You don’t need a special excuse these days to own a beautiful diamond.
So what is your favorite or most sentimental diamond story?
Rock on, Shivan
