Shape - Perfectly-round pearls are very rare. Quality necklaces combine various shapes from nearly-round to semi-round.
Nacre - The layers of calcium carbonate that make up the pearl. The longer a pearl is left in the oyster, the thicker its nacre and more intense its lustre.
Lustré - A pearl’s surface shine and reflectivity.
Mabé or “blister pearls” - Half-domed cultured pearl that grows on the inside of the mollusk shell instead of inside the mollusk.
Mother of pearl - Made from the iridescent layer of a mollusk shell.
