Netbooks are here

Ah, computers. They can map galaxies, help cure diseases, and solve infinitely complex mathematical algorithms in seconds. They’re capable of…

What’s that? You don’t care? You just want to check your email every three minutes and watch footage of playful kittens on Youtube?

You’re in luck.

Meet the Netbook
A Netbook is like a laptop but sleeker, more portable and more affordable. It’s designed primarily for wireless communication and access to the internet, which makes it the perfect pick-up for the casual user. Of course, the other goods are there as well, like word processing software and basic media applications.

Is it for you?
If you’re like most people, your computer use doesn’t go far beyond word documents, email and the internet. So if you buy an expensive laptop or desktop, you’re only going to use a small percentage what you’re paying for. In other words, why get more machine than you need? Imagine going to an expensive buffet and only getting one plate. Not smart, right?

Despite being toned down, the Netbooks we offer still have more than enough RAM and Hard Drive space for your everyday use, plus a fancy Intel Atom Processor made specifically for these little gems. Also, you won’t have to worry about user-friendliness: they all run Windows XP.

Why also are Netbooks great?
Everyone from busy professionals to students to general users can benefit from the increased portability and accessibility the Netbooks offer. They can help you breeze through all your tasks, compact style. And they look pretty sweet, too.

Also, they make a great second computer. If you already have a big hulking desktop or a full-sized laptop, a Netbook can be great to take to the coffee shop, the office or class.

And you won’t have a problem storing it. I used to have to pull out blueprints to figure out where I’d fit my desktop. Thankfully, the Netbooks weigh in at under 3 lbs—won’t have that issue anymore.

Buyer Beware
Many Netbooks don’t have the specs you need, which can turn into a real headache.  All of the Netbooks we offer have a more than generous amount of power and features (hard drive, ram, processor, etc). So check them out today!

J. in CA – A few options.  My best suggestion is to purchase your antivirus software online.  I use Norton and download it directly – most give that option.  Depending on your program you may be able to enter your code from the disc online. However, if you want you could do a PC to PC transfer (something that is very popular here when moving things from one computer to the next especially programs) but again this software is a separate purchase – but for many good to know it exists if they want to move a lot of files to a new computer.  Also note in terms of security there are a few good free sites out there for basic antivirus.

Take advantage of the fact that most netbooks run on Windows XP so you can turn on the firewall in the control panel for added protection.

Otherwise, you may have to find a way to get the disc on a flash drive and pop it into the netbook.

Thanks for the emails all! I really appreciate them :)

You can definitely find a good netbook for under $500 - If you see one for more $ (on our site) it’s that they are bundles with gifts that keep on giving like software. Also, generally when looking for a netbook I would always recommend at least 1 gigabyte of ram, and make sure it has a wireless connection built in. You also want to ensure if feels good hands on and last but not least I personally love having that cell battery = hours of battery life! To answer Steve's question while hard drive space is important, 8GB is really tiny. Even if it’s just for music and the road, you'll probably want to store more than 5-6 gig of music if you want to avoid constantly transferring and deleting music from your main computer. Other netbooks generously provide 100+GB, but if you’re stuck on a particular model you can still use jump drives and external hard drives if you feel you need more space, as long as you have an extra usb port available.

Hello Everyone I have to say that its sad that all Laptops are doing away with fire cable outputs. To sell machines like this is doing wrong for people who use them. I have a new Acc'er and its a waste to have.

Hi Katie, How do you use the web cam? I can get to it on My Computer but I don't know how to link it? I see people using it on TV and would love to be able to use it. Thank you Gail

Hi Katie I purchased Acer 11.6 250GB HDD in December and love it, but going to page to page can be slow. I read some reviews saying not to use Google because it takes a lot of space and to use AOL. Can you recommend what would fix this problem. Will they be making a bigger battery beause it does not last four hours like it mentioned on the show. Appeciate any advice on what to do. Thank you

Hi Kate, How long do you need to charge the battery for? I have an Acer Aspire I got back in January. I just got it up and running recently and the battery is dying down. Doesn't say anywhere for how long it needs to charge. Thanks for your help.

What recommendations do you have concerning firewall, virus, etc. protection when starting to use the netbook? If I have a security program how do I safely put it on (without a disc drive) before using the netbook?

I can highly recommend the notebook too. I don't need a computer with all the bells and whistles, just reliable email, internet and word. It's especially great for traveling because it's smaller and lightweight. Also in regards to new technology, check out the new life coaching software called Blastation. I have been looking for a great goal setting/organizational software for some time and they were all complicated and boring. This one is great! Try promo code blastationfb for 30 days free.

To help clarify, Windows XP itself uses around 2 gigabytes. So on a machine with 8 gigabytes of storage, it will leave you approx. 6 gigabytes for your files. Then you have to take into account the included software (I don't know it off-hand, it varies by model), but you can safely assume around 1-2 gigabytes of storage will be taken by the software. Most songs are around .05 gigabytes. A full DVD, encoded portability, can be between .4 gigabytes and 1 gigabytes typically. Hope this helps!

Ms. Linendoll, I came across you merely by accident. What a wonderful job you are doing to help the rest of us out here that just can't possibly keep up with all the new technical opportunities that come out. I have been looking for a laptop (possibly a netbook after reading your article). I am very impressed with HP products as my desktop is 5 years old and has never given me a problem. Call me crazy, but I believe I can purchase what I need in the $500.00 or less range. Do you think?
