REPURPOSING

Almost any large piece of cloth has the potential for a new life. It could be a tablecloth, a set of curtains, a bedspread or even a scarf. In our travels to Greece, there were no fabric store so I purchased a large cotton embroidered tablecloth. I figured that once it was turned it into a jumpsuit, I’d be a step ahead since the beautiful embroidery was already completed. The piece you’re looking at is the bodice and it was screaming for a surface embellishment. First, press a seam every inch and a quarter. Press a seam every inch and a quarter
Then, sew a ½" pleat on every seam being careful to make each seam the same length. Sew a ½ inch pleat on every seam
Open the pleats and Press them flat with the seam going down the center back. Then mark every other pleat every other inch with a small dot. Mark every two inches alternating pleats. Mark every two inches alternating pleats.
Fold the tiny pleat inward over the small dot and bartack. For best results, use your button attachment foot and a zig-zag in place for 6-8 stitches. Fold the tiny pleat inward
You may notice that I used the border of the tablecloth for the neckline, waistband and sleeve bands. It’s certainly unique and will remind me of Greece every time I put it on! It will reminds me of Greece every time I put it on!

EMBROIDERY

This month I wanted to share a SINGER Futura PHOTO-STITCH tip. The Photo-Stitch wizard will take you through the process with step by step instructional windows but until you have completed a few embroideries, you may have a limited understanding of how each window’s function will affect your finished stitched out photograph.

After you have chosen the photo, you’ll be asked to decide on the technique you would prefer to use. Let’s discuss the most realistic color photo stitch out today. When you click “Running Stitch” a color version of the photo will appear on the right including a graphic of the stitches pattern. choose photo
Next, the cropping window will appear which allows you to zero in on the area you would like to embroider by giving you the option to diminish the borders. In this case, I only wanted Pickle’s face, not her entire body so I clicked and dragged to move the lines or “crop” the photo. cropping window
If you change the measurement to “inches” and highlight and then type in 4.25 in the width window, the finished picture will fit nicely in your large hoop. The height will automatically readjust itself. measurement
I reduced colors to 30 on this screen. When I selected automatically reduce colors, the program chose 10 colors. You have to determine how much detail you would like to see in the finished picture and how much time you are willing to spend making it. Remember, 30 colors means 30 thread changes. colors
This last setting that I wanted to bring to your attention is the stitch density. The default is set at 10. With 10 you’ll get a finished product rather quickly but it will have larger stitches and little detail.

In the first Photo-Stitch out I used 10 mm stitch density and in the second Photo-Stitch out I reduced it to 6mm. You can see the difference in detail. In both Photo-Stitch outs I used only 10 colors. I changed from red to a deep rose for the picture on the right. The second stitch out took over five hours. I could have used 30 colors but I didn’t want to be late for the show?

Thanks for reading my blog this month~ Celebrate your creativity~ Think out of the box~ Reward yourself with a bubble bath~ Enjoy the process~ See you on-air.

I ordered the Singer Futura CE-250 to only be shorted the accessories that should have come with the system. HSN said they could not do anything but give me a partial refund on the package. How ridiculous!!! It is brand new. Don't they stand behind their customers by contacting the manufacterers and making them make good on their neglegence?

STILL HAVE PROBLEM...receive transfer download error message everytime I try to get the update for the 64bit driver from the singer website. Haven't been able to use my machine yet. And it's been a week and no response from Singer. Is there another website that is carrying the download????

Darlene Cahill, I would like your email address. I heard you say that you receive many emails but I cannot locate your email address on the sewing section. I have written questions on this blog and have not received any answers. I figured that you did not have my email address so I tried to send it to you greatfully it was not printed on this blog. How many machines do you have? I am torn between the Singer 7470 and the Brother 294 stitch special edition? which one is your preference?

Vista 64 bit runs fine, print instruction & follow & everything loaded first time. SES1000 is the CE-150, sticker covers this on my book. However, you are getting all those extra feet! That is the difference. Do you want more attachments or the little design stitches. I dont use the little designs on my old machine, and every foot I needed wasn't cheep! All the machines have the Auto Punch, HyperFont, Cross-Stitch & PhotoStitch. Called Singer and talk about customer service, real people answer!

The download for the vista 64bit does not work. You wait, go through the install process only to receive an error message. This whole sewing machine purchase has been a mess. First ordered the ses1000 but received the ce150,returned it to get the ses1000 and it was sold out. Ended up with the ce250 but now I cant even use it. 2 months of frustration. So disappointed.

Some items missing on presentation are: DVD, arm with accessory storage , Cording foot (bonus), Darning and embroidery foot (bonus), Ruffler (bonus), Vinyl dust cover and Carry handle that folds. Susan, Just like the thread, you will have to purchase the stabilizer. Both of these are items that you will have to replace as you use your machine. There are lots of stabilizers out there--you can usually find them in you local sewing/fabric stores. It's what goes behind your embroidery to keep it stable and ensure quality embroidering. I would suggest getting the cheapest available while you are learning and then try different kinds to see which you prefer (sticky back, wash away, etc.).

I just placed an order for the Singer Futura CE-250, and I am so excited to get it and get started! I do have a concern, though. I have watched the videos of both the CE-250 and the SES-1000 and they both say that you get a 5x7 embroidery hoop included in the package. I ordered this machine, because I wanted a larger 5x7 hoop. However, when I look at this machine elsewhere or even look for accesories for this machine, the largest hoop that I can find for the machine is the 4x6.

Also check in between boxes becuase sometimes HSN put the softwaer there. I litterally had to putt all the boxes appart to be able to find the software for my SES-1000. Hope it helps!

Dear Darlene, I just received my Futura SES1000 and am very excited to get started. I consider myself new to the sewing world since I have not sewed in the last 20 years. I have a question on my machine. I cannot sew continuously without the machine beeping and stopping, then start sewing again and the same process over and over. The light that flashes is 19. I have rethreaded several times, shut the machine off, start over, reinserted the bobbin, etc. etc. What am I doing wrong?

Dear Kate MO, You cannot use the Futura embroidery side of the machine if it is not attached to the computer. To play with the software turn on the machine, open the program on my laptop and then turn off the machine. If you open the Futura program like this you can keep using the program. But remember if you what to stitch the design, Save your desgin, Close the Futura program, turn on the machine , put the hoop and THEN open the program. This will avoid beepings confution on the machine.

THe CE-150 and SES-1000 are the same machine. At HSN the SES-1000 brings more extras. The CE-250 and CE-350 are the same machine but this last one brings the editing software. Dear BF,AL, What are the differences between the CE150, SES1000 that makes the CE-350 so much more attractive? or More in demand? I use my CE-150 for normal garment construction than for embroidry even though I am working on a project that I will be adding monograms, embroidry designs on it. It is a sewing machine cover for my own CE-150. This is the first time where I will be using the embroidry part of my CE-150.

I bought the CE 150 and am VErY impressed with it. 20 years ago doing this kind of work at home for this price was inconceivable! Even 10 years ago I was paying for embroidery and never dreamed of 'investing in a machine. So I have to say for under 800 bucks - extra feet or no extra feet - this is a DEAL. Is there a bigger hoop available? And is there a way to use the software without the sewing machine being attached? I take my laptop around the house, and would like to play with designs.

Just got the Brother PC420 and while I love it, I'm wondering if it's stitching right. When I do the alligator, it doesn't make the back legs. It also leaves the bottom of the outlined letters open (small gap)... and it doesn't make a complete eyelet, it looks like it should make 2 or 3 more stitches to make a complete circle. Hi Darlene, Have somebody realized that the video posted under the CE-250 is not that machine? It is for the SES-1000 so it has the wrong video source. Also I asked about the machines being sold right now (CE-150, SES-1000 and CE-250) to HSN to make sure if they come with the editing software and their answer was yes. THIs is wrong. Because the software for editing is CE-350 and neither ones of them comes with it. Darlene please correct this on the next show because is confusing. Thanks!

Hi Darlene, as usual I'm watching all the presentations of Singer and Brother and getting some great tips and ideas from you. BUT I'm still waiting to see the Singer felting machine shown again. Unless I missed a show somewhere it was only been shown the one time on air for promotion. Please try to work it in on another show so we can get some more great ideas for ways to embellish using this fantastic machine. Thanks for all the tips tricks and ideas you give the sewers.

Hello Darlene, I purchased your 24 pak of Melrose Threads on 5/29/09, Thru my account HSN asked me to write a rewiew. I did, they refused it said I never ordered it, or over 180 days since placing the order. None of which is correct. Love the threads 5 stars, opened the box, it was like opening a box of candy and not knowing which one to choose. I wanted to try them all immediately. The presentation, spools, and colors will make any project look professional, for novice or professional.

HI Darlene, As Tensi from Florida wrote, I am also waiting for the CE-350. I already have a SES-1000 and need another embroidery machine which has to be teh CE-350. My friends are interested too and I convinced them to wait for the CE-350. But it is sold out already. Any chance thatthe CE-350 will come soon?

Hello everyone. Darlene, I read in your notes that BROTHER is introducing the PE770 embroidery machine to all our viewers. This embroidery only machine will now have a finger drive portal for inserting entire embroidery design discs.I am not sure what the finger drive portal and entire emroidery design discs are.I am NOT computer savy at all. Do you mean CD's? Please explain for those of us who don't know computer lingo. Also, is HSN planning on selling the Singer CE-350? Thanks so much!

Hi. Darling, This Joann from Hempstead NY. I also purchased the singer 3,4,5 serger top of the line and would benefit from an instructional CD. The book is hard to follow. Can you produce one that has instructions for you projects and at the same time instuct how to thread, change the feet, and other essentials to produce the projects that sold me on purchasing the machine? Thanks, need help.

I like many would also like to see answers. That said I have the SES1000, just ready to pack up to send back. I just can,t seem to get the threading right. ThRead breaks durning a dasign at least 5 times. Is the CE250 any better. or the 150. Going to try a few times today but if no luck back it goes. I read reviews that others had the same proublems. Can you please tell me if its me or the machine. Is it that touchy. Also the auto threader does not work or line up. Now what????? One last thing

It would be great if after posting on this forum, we could get the ANSWERS to everyone's questions posted as well. It's very difficult to have the same questions as several others who have posted and not see the answers to an already asked question. Would this be possible???? Thanks.

Hi Darlene, How can we purchase an instructional DVD for Singer Quantumlock 5-4-3-2 serger item:253-437. Singer top of the line serger item:424-620 looks very much like the same machine.(it comes with a DVD) The DVD would be much easier than the instructional book. Thanks for you help.

I was watching your sewing program this morning & you said the Singer 7470 has a DVD w/it. I ordered my 7470 from HSN & I didn't get a DVD. I even went in my sewing room after the show & looked in the box & all over my sewing area & didn't find this DVD. I would love to have one because this machine is so different than my old sewing machine (bought in 1981). I can't find in the manual the stitch width conversion. I used mostly stitch width 7 on my old machine but this machine goes from 2-4-HELP

Hi Darlene. I noticed with the new top of the line Singer Serger there is an instructional DVD. I have the other five thread singer serger and would love to get an instructional DVD for it, and I am sure I am not alone. Please, Please let Singer know we need a DVD,at a reasonable price, it would make our lives so much easier. Thank you, Sandra

Hi,Darlene. This was very informative! I am contemplating a Singer CE-250 because of the embroidery software you through in.I'll be honest, the Singer scares me because of all the negative feedback left. I own a Babylock EllageoE (the first to come out, not the current Ellageos which have USB ports, mine only a card or floppy). Babylock is made by Brother,as you know. The new Brother PE770 sounds so nice! I will be glued to all the sewing shows on HSN! SUGGESTIONS WELCOME! Thanks!!!
