International Update!
Every year at this time the Jewelry Buyers make their way to Hong Kong and Thailand. Huge jewelry shows take place there at least twice a year. The photo below is Pamela, one of our brilliant Buyers, at the Royal Palace and temple in Bangkok.
While she was there she studied several couture trends including chandelier earrings, global influences like oxidized, Balinese style textures and new uses of brass and copper. On the other end, but still highly stylized, there were the organic looks with rough diamonds, rutilated quartz, cabochons and beads of rough precious stones. In the past they would have been exclusively reserved for faceting. You’ll love how you can peer into the stones just like a crystal ball and see all kinds of things. Have you ever looked at a cloud and thought you saw an animal shape or if you are like me, I swear there is a siloutte of a bunny rabbit on the moon. Look for it! I’ve pointed it out to friends before and they have agreed. It could have been just to change the topic now that I think about it though. When I look in cabochons or even stones under the microscope sometimes the characteristics of the stones look like Mother Nature’s drawing board. I have seen what looks like a dragon, a heart, a turtle! I’m not the only one seeing critters! Even at the world class designer’s at the show Pamela went to were interpreting animals in gems – not as clarity characteristics, but as pins, rings and necklaces. The list included; snakes, diamond fox pins, spiders, lady bugs baroque pearls (later made into butterflies with gold.) This reminds me…while I was in Tucson, I saw the most amazing pearl creation in the body of Pegasus with wings of 24k gold.
I hope your passport is up to date like our Buyer’s are – if not, no worries. We are bringing the world to you. Let’s go to Italy first! I just watched that movie about the woman who reinvents herself “under the Italian sun”? Do you remember it from 2003? The history and nature there is so lush. I want to introduce you to a very special guest who we are so proud to have at HSN: Meredith Borowski! She brings her Treasures D’Italia Line of gold. You may know her from her many years on TV with her gorgeous jewelry. She is one of the superstars who will be part of our special event at the end of March called Passport to Fine Jewelry. Here we are together modeling some of her creations. OMG we are so alike! I am happy they are putting us on air together, but I have already been warned by my best friend that Meredith and I will need to slow down and breathe during the show. We both tend to speak quickly when we are excited. And I am very excited about Meredith coming to HSN. Her new treasures are going to be wonderful additions to your collections. So if you don’t know her yet, I’m sure you will love her. She is a busy mom, learned the gold trade from her dad and travels to Italy 4 times a year to work with her designers. Love it! Love her!
As we move into April, just like the flowers start to bloom, our designers are also revealing their new collections in fine jewelry. Vera of Pearls by Veronica will be here with another amazing crochet Agate necklace and we will see the return of rose drusy. Rare jumbo coin pearls and jumbo pearls in all colors will be shown. They are so hard to acquire, but we have them! Speaking of color, we are launching colors of titanium with gemstones. They are so different and breathtaking. Justine Simmons is bringing a new watch on April 7th. I haven’t had a chance to work with her yet, so I am psyched. She is also bringing some very distinctive creations that are so “beyond”. Check her out on the 10th and 11th of April too.
Per Your Request!
Boy, oh boy, did we hear you loud and clear about the bowls made of Turquoise and Lapis from Jay King. I just talked to him 3 days ago and he is working on them. They will be limited editions. So as soon as you see them, don’t wait. He must have said that to me 6 times on the phone. I think he is worried he may never be able to do them again. He hates to disappoint you.
We will be doing another loose gem show this summer and it is going to be bigger and even better than the last one. We do have stones here at HSN.com if you need something before the show airs.
Pat, KY – the best way to make your Turquoise shine is to polish it. It does take polish well. When unpolished the luster is dull. You may need to take it to a bench jeweler for a professional polish wheel. I doubt a polishing cloth and elbow grease will give you the look you want.
Patti, NV – I will ask about the Tashmarine Garnet and get back to you.
Tammy, NY – good for you! I hope your design dreams come true. I do personally recommend the Gemological Institute of America for classes on jewelry making and the industry. Many of the classes can be done at home. They have a website.
Mike, VA – I love that you want more men’s jewelry. We don’t do a lot on TV, but our collections here at HSN.com are very cool. Have you searched our selections?
Deborah, AR and Jeanette, FL – I am working on getting your e-mails to Jay so you can have your situations resolved. Sorry it has taken so long.
I’m running late to get ready to go on-air, but will look forward to your comments and requests. Happy Spring (almost here!)
Rock on! Shivan
