HSN timeline
1977
- HSN was founded when 112 electric can openers were sold on a Clearwater, FL AM radio station. The show became a regularly scheduled “Suncoast Bargaineers” show.
1981-1986
- Business concept grows to Tampa Bay area local access cable as “Home Shopping Channel”
- Home Shopping Channel launched nationwide as Home Shopping Club, broadcasting 24-hours a day on cable and local TV
- IPO of HSN on American Stock Exchange
1993
- Liberty Media acquires controlling interest of HSN
1995
- Barry Diller acquires HSN and becomes Chairman of the Board
1998
- HSN begins moving away (“disengagement”) from owned and operated and affiliated full power TV stations
1999
- HSN acquires Ingenious Designs, a producer of consumer products sold via direct response TV ads and infomercials
- HSN.com launched and was profitable within 3 months
- Expansion to Germany and Japan
2001
- Acquisition of Improvements brand catalog and website from Hanover Direct Inc.
- More revenue on hsn.com generated in Q4 2001 than all of FYE 2000
2002
- Final disengagement of HSN’s owned and operated TV stations
2003
- America’s Store launched on DirectTV as a second channel for HSN
2006
- Mindy Grossman appointed CEO of IAC’s Retailing division
- HSN customers begin receiving prepaid UPS labels for return of products
- “Shop By Remote” introduced allowing TV viewers to purchase items with a remote control
2007
- Rollout of re-branding initiative with introduction of new sets, graphics and on-air presentations as well as a refreshed HSN.com
- America’s Store broadcast ends
- Shop By Remote service launched nationally
- HSN.com fully integrates video and HSN becomes one of the largest providers of video to youtube.com
2008
- HSN launches MySpace and facebook pages
- “Flashbuy” launched as an interactive part of the website which allows customers once a week to vote on selected products for promotion
