Top 3 gem favorites

Preparing for a Jewelry show is no small task. I sit with the Buyers, and we go over every ring, necklace and earrings.  I ask lots of questions. How were we able to get such a great price? Will we be able to hold that price next year (or next month)? Where were the stones discovered? The dialogue continues concerning why the Buyers made the decisions to buy an item. It can be several months to bring you exactly what you want. They dive in telling me about some super find:  they can't contain themselves!  I often wish they were on the set with me telling you the story themselves.

Sandy, our Gemstone Buyer and I, usually book an hour to review shows before they air.  Invariably, we both end up calling home saying we will be late, and the sessions last much longer than our allotted time. (Drove our families and her staff nuts the first several phone calls but now they just expect it.) We try to be more succinct, but there is so much to talk about when it comes to our passion about gemstones, especially Exotics.

Last week, Sandy and I started talking about Exotic gems, the rarest of the rare, our favorites. She had three top picks for 2008.  If you want to hear more about Sandy, read my other blog “How we Get the Greatest Gems”.

And her three picks are:

  • Tanzanite. What is there not to love about Tanzanite?  Sandy has this huge Tanzanite ring that she wears when she wants to feel special or she knows she has a marathon day before her. It  makes her feel better. I have a few rings like that. Wearing one of them just makes such a difference in my mood. Tanzanite has so much to do with glamour and believe it or not, real estate. Those mines in Tanzania will be depleted one day and we will have no more of this treasure to share with you.  One day, perhaps, another site might be found, but that is not looking like a strong prospect right now. The good news is Sandy has this great relationship with one of the original site-holders for the mine. I've mentioned it before, but it bears repeating. Type in Amijones in our search bar and see what comes across your computer screen. Everyone calls him Amijones, due to his adventures in his quest for gems.

  • Alexandrite. If you have never seen it in person, it is truly a sight to behold. The color changes from red to green to many hues in between –magically! If you have ever seen it, you can't forget it. It's wild. Finding Alexandrite affordably has been a vision quest of Sandy's for a long time. I've seen what soon will be arriving at  HSN, and you are going to be delighted!  I cannot wait to reveal it to you (timing is everything so be patient… it will be worth the wait!) Her efforts have produced a direct source where the colors are so vivid and vibrant. If it wasn't exceptional, our QA department would make us call it just Chrysoberyl.  The origin of Alexandrite is so opposite of Tanzanite. It was found in the Urals in 1830 on the day of Prince Alexander of Russia's coming of age.

  • Drusy. It isn't officially an Exotic stone, but it is such a mesmerizing material you can't stop gazing into it. Because this jewel is so special, we put two of our finest Buyers- Sandy and Marjorie- to work to acquire as much Drusy as they could. Both adore Drusy, and so do I.  Sandy always sets her finds in gold to make them super special heirlooms. She does the same with Drusy. Many designers have become obsessed with this particular stone too. Mother Nature's pave is my favorite way to describe it. Mother Nature and science got together to pull off much of the Drusy you see at HSN. The natural stone with a special Titanium coating that gives off the iridescence and color story that will make you a Drusy lover too!

Do you own any Tanzanite, Alexandrite, or Drusy? What do you love about it? Thanks for reading my blog. I really want to know what you think about these stones so please let me know.

Rock on,
Shivan

Loved your show tonight with Jay King..I have quite a few pieces of Jay's. Love when he is on and love his story's...I look forward to hear about the Rainbow silica, but the item always sells out and I never get to hear about the stone. Can you possibly tell me ( and I'm sure many of HSN's viewers would like to know also). Thank you

I am a gemstone lover and have been studying hardness and various other aspects of mining and gemology. Turns out that Alexandrite and Tanzanite are stones that have just never caught my interest. I like colors that are more pure. As for drusy? I feel similarly to drusy as I do to turquois: nothing but a casual summerwear type stone, and I don't like turquoise as jewelry for me. I collect rocks and would not mind having a piece of turquoise, but not to wear.

I have requested this many times, and don't seem to get any response. I love buying your jewelry and have many pieces. I am a petite woman of 5'2''. My ring size is a 4 and HSN have VERY LITTLE to offer in that size. I understand that the majority of woman are bigger and wear a bigger size, but I know I'm not the ONLY woman to wear a 4. Can you please start getting more rings in a smaller size. Obviously you wouldn't need to carry as many as the other larger sizes, but how about a few.

It's so fun to read your blogs! I'm with you on the Tanzanite, I love it! The color is so awesome, especially if you can find a solitaire between a half carat and a full carat, with the deep, deep color. I have several rings but most of them are cluster or band rings and I have a heart necklace my hon got me and a 3 stone necklace he got me also. The drusy is another fav of mine, don't own any yet, but I will! Ah Alexandrite, an awesome stone, don't own any yet, but maybe soon.

I love Heidi Daus. I am a very new Heidi Daus customer and bought my first piece just last year. I now have four necklaces, one ring and one pair of earrings. I just ordered another ring and necklace. Her designs are so stunning and unique, and each time I wear one of her pieces, I get compliments from strangers and acquaintances alike.

Shivan, you are my favorite host! I love most of the jewelry, and wish I was a millionaire when I watch your jewelry shows! Could you ask Jay King's group to email me? A turquoise bracelet I bought from his collection a couple of years ago broke. I have been writing to customer service repeatedly, asking them about having it fixed, but to no avail. They keep telling me they can't give me his or any of the hosts' email addresses. Thanks so much!

My husband chose my engagement ring himself. It's an Alexandrite with intense color change, ranging from nearly emerald green to a deep purplish blue. No one ever knows what the stone is, and I love being so unique. Even better, we just recently figured out that its value has increased quite a bit since when he bought it, since Alexandrites with that type of color change and of that size (a little over 1.5 carats) are becoming increasingly rare!

Shivan, I appreciate your vivid descriptions and product knowledge. Good luck to you with your GIA certification. I would appreciate your explaining on the air at some point how to clean your druzy stones. I have a couple of items from Jay King, and I really need to clean them but am apprehensive to do so. I would appreciate your response very much. Thank you.

Shivan where were you at when you were holding the strands of the gorgeoous beads at the Tucson Gem Show? I was just watching Jay King and saw the video clip. I have gone to the show several times and have never seen beads of that quality. Please tell me where were you?

Does Jay King have a book? He has so much knowledge and could listen to him for hours. If he doesn't have a book he should seriously consider writing one - it would be a best seller!

I have a beautiful tanzanite ring, I have had quite a few years, there used to be a host, I cant remember his name, and he said they would be runnung out of those stones. and the mines would be closing up. so I went around all the jewelery stores in orlando and finally found just what I wanted, I cant remember the price, but it was not expensive, I have only worn it a few times as I am afraid to loose one of the stones, so its only for special occasions.

My very first couture ring was with tanzanite. The color is mesmerizing. I wish the stone is much harder so that it would be perfect for daily wear.

I own two, 1.5ct trillion cut Tanzanite stones. I did this as an investment and because I love the color and the history of the stone. I wanted to ensure that I would have these pieces to create my own jewelry or pass on to my daughter. I also own several smaller size stones that I have collected when the price point was affordable. I would like to know what gemstones you consider to be complimentary with Tanzanite? in what type of setting? I enjoy watching you as a show host.

First of all I just love watching you Shivan. You are great. I own a Tanzanite pendant. It is a heart. I love heart jewelry, and the Tanzanite is perfect. My birthstone is Amethyst but I love the purple/blue of Tanzanite.
