Gifting 101 No matter your religious background, the end of the year is a season of holidays and that means gift giving. We’ve all gotten those socks, shirts, or ties that just don’t work and there’s nothing worse than receiving a gift you’re not excited about. So when it comes to purchasing gifts, only give gifts that you would want to receive or your friends can use, which means putting some thought into selecting the gifts.
To get organized start by dividing your list into three categories: Family, friends, and professional contacts. Start with last year’s gift list and edit it. If you’re one of those ultra organized people, start shopping as early as June or July to avoid the rush. If you’re like me, hit the web!
No matter what methodology you use, think about the recipient’s likes and dislikes; for the foodie - hot sauces flavored vinegars, infused oils, for the sports enthusiast – tickets to the game. Some of my favorite gift-giving and receiving ideas are theme based….a variety of teas with a great book would be appreciated by almost anyone, a collection of CD’s is another great idea, a scented candle, a fragrant room spray and a bag of potpourri wrapped together makes a wonderful offering.
Never give something to someone you wouldn’t want yourself. If you receive something that you don’t need or really want, there’s nothing wrong with giving it to someone you feel will better appreciate it more. That’s different than giving, or re-gifting, something you really don’t like. For last minute gifts, keep a case of gift-wrapped champagne or wine on hand. Buy some fragrant candles and keep them in the front closet, or give the gift of music!
And of course, presentation is as important as the gift itself. The price of the gift doesn’t matter, a beautifully presented, wrapped and tied package is exciting receive. I’m environmentally conscious, but loads and loads of tissue, a big bow and fab bag make even the simplest items lavish and luxurious. I always use one wrapping paper each year that’s in keeping with my motif. If I have enough time I’ll even use leftover decorations from the tree to embellish the gifts packaging to make it look more festive. Cinnamon sticks, dried leaves, a poinsettia blossom and even Christmas holly add a spirited touch.
