Gem Month

Traditionally, HSN does a Gem Week every year. We have 100s of new designs for you and returning favorites. We simply couldn’t fit it into a week. This year is the start of hopefully, what will be a great new event at HSN – GEM MONTH. It is going to be a huge October. It is the perfect time for you to invest in yourself with some of our new finds, but also the gift of jewelry, has so much sentiment and meaning attached to it. You'll find something for everyone on your gift list!

This month long celebration is going to highlight designs from everyone of our superstar designers like Nicky Butler, Jewels by Bezhad, Royal Bali Silver, Sima K, Elegante, Victoria Wieck, Pearls by Veronica and Technibond – that is just to name a few! Gem month has been in the works since last year in many cases. It's definitely been worth the wait!

Recently, I was in my hometown of NYC, training for my Graduate Gemological Degree from the GIA. I had some great breakthroughs as far as my understanding of gems goes. This is the most intense part of the degree. I have to identify 500 stones in this section of the coursework. I have over 100 done and can’t wait to get past the 250 mark – Okay, I mean the 499 mark. The colored gems I am studying right now are GREEN. Emeralds, Sapphires, Tsavorites, Jadeite, Nephrite, Tourmaline…you get the idea. I’ve completed blue and red stones. Orange, yellow and brown stones are the next set. It is intense! Next I’m off to the international headquarters of The Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad for more training soon. Can’t wait to tell you all about it.

While I was at a GIA event in NYC, I ran into Lisa, a customer who was sporting an Iman handbag and a Slinky twin set! That is how I knew she shopped at HSN. We had a great time chatting up jewelry and fashion.

Speaking of fashion and Manhattan, I also stopped by Sam Edelman’s shoe showroom. It was amazing. It turns out, I knew his Grandmother, Florence. Can you believe it? She was great friends with my mom and truly a lovely person. Small world!

October Gem Month is looking to be the perfect combination of fashion, fun, and treasures. Don’t miss a moment…and be on the look out for Alexandrite!! We have saved some of the best Mine Finds from Jay King for you this month.  There are also tons of Diamonds and Exotics in Sterling Silver and of course Opals, the birthstone for October- it's a gemstone jackpot!

As promised, I wanted to address some of your requests and questions. We are working on more size 4 rings and clip-on earrings!! How do you clean Drusy? Carefully – that is the pave of Mother Nature. I would use a gentle soap and a bit of moisture. Don’t over do it with the scrubbing and rubbing. I hope that helps.

Want to know more about in the world of gems? Leave me a comment and I will try to get you the inside scoop.

Rock on!
Shivan

Hi Shivan I would like your opinion of the Martha Rocha (sp?) which as you know is a very deep puplish kunzite. I am aware that light and heat can lighten the kunzite but depending on which jeweler I asked the answer changes. I have been told the kunzite will not turn wearing daily. That too much sun would mean similar to a week at the beach wearing the stone.I know that kunzite is hard to cut due to it's softness but is it too soft to wear daily. Is this a daily stone to wear? Thanks

This year HSN doesn't seem to have offered as much Moissanite. Do you know if there will be any offered before Thanksgiving? I keep looking for them as part of Gem Month (?). Enjoy your hosting. Good-luck on the studies.

Hi Shivan, It's Jays' rock hound buddy, Tracey, here... I have a question regarding the Red Andesine / Labradorite that was recently one of the cover stories of Colored Stone mag,.... What is Victoria going to do about the situation??? If SHE could be fooled, then what about the rest of us mortals? I might stick to shoes:). Thanks. T

Loved seeing you and Jay King this past weekend. Jay offered many beautiful green turquoise pieces over the weekend but didn't see any green turquoise earrings. Would leave to see Jay do green turquoise drop earrings, surrounded with silver, something like item #289-111 at least 2 inches long and three quarter inches wide. They would compliment his beautiful green turquoise pieces beautifully with the quality he is so known for. Was also wondering if turquoise can be died red?

This weekend I purchased ten of Jay King's jewelry pieces! I do have a couple of requests though that I hope you will pass on to him. Please, please make beaded necklaces with pendants that are at least 19 inches in length and also matching dangle earrings. Thanks

Great to talk to you and Jay King tonight. My first time to ever call in; or to email a host. I wanted to ask Jay if he could make earrings to go with the Salmon Coral necklace.I thought it was cute when you suggested we put Jay's photo under our pillow. I would love to go with Jay on a Mind Find adventure; guess that is out because he said he had a girlfriend. Keep me in mind if he becomes available. I loved watching you when you were on nights. Good luck in your gemological studies.

Studying gems would have to be fun. I know I would love it. I was wondering do you own any jewelry from HSN, and if so how much? I know if I worked there I would own pretty much every peice. I love it so much.

Wow, Shivan! I am so jealous. I have ALWAYS wanted to study gems but thought it would be such a huge commitment if I was going to do it well. So I am THRILLED that you are doing this for me and I can turn to you as my resident expert! So how do you clean sterling silver that has turquoise in it? And should you ever use those dips that you submerge the jewelry in if the piece does (or doesn't) have stones it it? I LOVE your shows! Especially the fact that YOU love jewelry as much as I do!
