2012 RMS Titanic 100th Anniversary GBP5 Coin Features

Commemorates the 100th anniversary of Titanic's fateful maiden voyage
  • On April 10th, 1912, RMS Titanic left Southampton to pick up passengers from Cherbourg, France and Queenstown, Ireland, and take over 2,000 passengers total to New York
  • Just before midnight on April 14th, she struck an iceberg and sank in three short hours
  • Little more than 700 people survived: It was one of the world's greatest maritime disasters
  • Her tragic story still affects us deeply and, in 2012, the world will stop to remember the great ship and those who perished with her

The pride of Belfast
  • The world's largest passenger liner at the time of her launch, RMS Titanic was a magnificent ship, grand and lavishly furnished, built at the Belfast shipyards of Harland and Wolff in Ireland
  • A memorial statue designed by Sir Thomas Brock and erected in Belfast in 1920 shows Thane receiving the victims from the sea
  • Both the Titanic herself and the memorial in Belfast were used as inspiration in the design of this special commemorative coin
