- The Lincoln Cent design was first introduced in 1909 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. It was the first United States circulating coin to bear a president's image.
- Since 1959, the reverse on the penny has been an image of the Lincoln Memorial designed by Frank Gasparro. That will change in 2009
- 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Cent
- As part of this year's celebration, the United States Mint will issue 4 different reverse designs for the 2009 Lincoln Cent:

- Formative Years in Indiana
- Professional Life in Illinois

- The obverse will retain the profile of President Abraham Lincoln by Victor David Brenner
- Single pennies - graded MS67; mint state coins having no visible hairlines without magnification
- Penny rolls - graded MS65; above normal mint state coins with fewer than normal bagmarks
- Sealed in clear acrylic holders - each coin is encapsulated to help protect and preserve it
- Graded by ANACS
- Coins produced by Philadelphia and Denver Mints
