  • The edge of this Presidential coin is smooth

Struck-Through-Grease Error

  • On rare occasions, grease or another foreign substance accidentally builds up on the coin dies. When the coin is struck, the grease prevents the design from being fully transferred to the coin planchet and the substance is spread in a "starburst" pattern over the coin's surface
  • This is a rarely seen error because foreign substances almost never get onto the dies, and only a few coins can be struck before the substance wears off the dies
