2006 PF70 NGC San Francisco "Old Mint" $5 Gold Coin Features:

  • Issued by the United States Mint in tribute to the San Francisco Old Mint
  • Obverse features a rendition of the Old Mint modeled on the 1869 construction drawing by A.B. Mullett
  • Reverse design is a replica of the 1906 Half-Eagle Coronet Liberty eagle reverse, designed by Christian Gobrecht
  • Carries the distinctive "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint
  • The solid construction of the Old Mint, also known as the "Granite Lady," enabled it to survive the earthquake and fire
  • The Old Mint was able to reopen immediately after the disaster to provide relief funds to the city of San Francisco
  • Graded PF70 (Proof) - a Proof coin with the highest possible grading of 70; struck at least twice on highly polished coin blanks to bring out the mirrored background and high-relief images

About the Old Mint:
  • In 1852, President Millard Fillmore approved an Act of Congress establishing a branch of the United States Mint in San Francisco to convert miners' gold from the California gold rush into coins
  • The Old Mint building was the second building in San Francisco to house the United States Mint there
